Go Skateboarding Day Kabul

June 21, 2010 from 2:00pm to 11:00pm

What Went Down?

Skateistan, the first co-educational skateboarding school in Afghanistan, is hosting and organizing the second annual Go Skateboarding Day Kabul on June 21, 2010. We’ll be skating the streets of Kabul from Mekroyan fountain, where Skateistan was born, to the Skateistan park that was completed late last year. Upon arrival at the skatepark there will be a competition and an all day skate session until 11pm, when we’ll hold a live Skype conference between the kids at Skateistan and the Skate to Kabul supporters in Basel, Switzerland. The skaters in Basel are taking part in a Go Skateboarding Day event where they'll not only collect donations for Skateistan but also hit the streets and skate a 5000 meter distance through the city to represent the 5000 kilometer distance between Basel and Kabul. Skateistan’s staff and the kids of Kabul will be skating their own city’s streets, at the same time, in solidarity.

The Afghan skate scene will be represented in full force by the boys and girls of Skateistan, as well as the Skateistan volunteers and staff members. There’s sure to be a mix of some of Afghanistan’s very first skateboarders and some of the very newest. Last year 30 kids made it out to Go Skateboarding Day Kabul, including the self-named Dusty Kids and the Shining Stars. This year marks the first Go Skateboarding Day to take place in the recently completed Skateistan park, which will definitely bring out many of the 300 students, who love any excuse to go skating.
